German SAP User Group DSAG – First-hand Feedback on the Annual Meeting

The DSAG Jahreskongress 2010 (annual German SAP User Group meeting) in Nürnberg wrapped up September 23rd after 3 solid days of activity. Our selected team of SAP Portal experts were on hand and provided some personal feedback on their impressions of the show.

Quick Show Overview:

With more than 3,500 visitors, the 11th annual meeting of the German SAP User Group DSAG held from September 21st -23rd set new records. Attendance was up more than 20% as compared to last year and with 137 exhibitors showing everything they had to offer. This was also the first DSAG meeting in the beautiful city of Nürnberg, Germany.

News at the show:

After the hassles of support contract changes from late 2008, all the negative impacts have been sorted out. This year’s conference was more about content and solutions where DSAG speaker Prof. Karl Liebstückel talked extensively about the new cooperation with SAP.

One important wish DSAG asked from SAP was for more transparency on the complex pricing. This year the DSAG sponsored a delta list on what has changed in pricing over last year.  Prof. Liebstückel believes this should be done by SAP to provide more transparency. The current price list has more than 1,100 product positions and 11 pages of support prices which makes it difficult to notice changes.

It has become a tradition that the SAP CEO speaks at the annual meetings of the world’s largest SAP user groups.  This year was no exception with CEO Jim Hageman Snabe. His talk on certified expertise and technical depth was well received by the audience with friendly applause.

Snabe took some criticism from the DSAG which was obvious. SAP had made mistakes and learned the lessons from these slip-ups. Mistakes such as redesigned developments, changed responsibilities within SAP, and other developments along with quality control were spoken about.

However, he talked about innovation and mentioned SAP wants to further reduce time on developments and support packages and hence reduce costs for their clients.

At the Sweetlets Booth

We had many contacts, both existing and new at the Sweetlets booth. While a variety of peoples experiences were being exchanged, the common questions revolved around the 7.3 portal and its benefits. We took part in the 7.3 beta for portals program and many clients were interested to get our first hand experiences on this topic. Our team did live demonstrations of the new portal, not to mention many of our other SAP Portal solutions.

Presentation on SAP Portal Analytics

The Sweetlets presentation with Daniel Stasiak of Mundipharma Pharmaceuticals was well perceived. Daniel is a one man team who runs a profitable, efficient and one of the most successful SAP Portals in the IT community.  He showed the audience how he analyzes data provided by Click Stream to maximize ROI in Mundipharma’s SAP Portal.

SAP Portal 7.3 Presentation From SAP

Two presentations from SAP were organized by the portal working group of the DSAG, both with about 130 people in attendance.

The first was presented by SAP Product Manager Thomas Hensel on the new upcoming 7.3 Portal.  SAP shared the experiences from clients and partners on the beta program. Although under the umbrella of a legal disclaimer a lot of the new features have been demonstrated. The same presentation will be shown at SAP TechEd.

The second was about the Enterprise Workspaces with Winfried Wenisch of SAP Product Management. SAP Enterprise Workspaces currently is in Ramp-Up and will also be shown at SAP TechEd.

An afternoon client presentation on the 7.3 beta experience was planned, but unfortunately canceled. Instead Jürgen Halstenberg from Lufthansa and speaker of DSAG work group for portals, organized an open question and answer session about portal topics. Our colleagues Josef Minde and Steffen Bunzel were asked to share their experiences and insights into the new 7.3 and how it will affect Sweetlets’ roadmap.
