Recap: DSAG Technology Days 2011 in Hannover
February 18, 2011
The SAP German SAP user group just wrapped up their second largest event of the year – the DSAG Technology Days 2011(DSAG Technologietage 2011). The IT conference, hosted by the world’s biggest SAP user group, took place February 15th & 16th at the Convention Center in Hanover, Germany. Sweetlets supported the congress with a booth and participation from a small handful of the team members. Let’s recap!
Day 1 High-Lights
First off, SAP talked about UI strategy which peaked quite a bit of interest from attendees. Within two separate presentations, seats were completely filled and standing room only remained. People listened in from outside the room in attempts to catch a few words and views through the three main doors. However, there was not much in-depth news to report on. SAP simply provided an overview about existing UI technologies.
The first day also included a series of talks from SAP on newly released technologies like NetWeaver 7.30 and Enterprise Workspaces. The key items:
- Portal 7.30 Ramp-Up – Approximately 50 customers have participated so far
- Enterprise Workspaces -General availability already, but does require an additional license.
No updated information on migrating from older portal versions to the latest 7.30 surfaced. However, SAP announced news about minor enhancements which have been added since the beta phase of NetWeaver 7.30.
Day 2 High-Lights
In the portal group on the second day, SAP customers mentioned a few interesting items:
- A more appealing custom KM front-end
- HTML adopted
- Javascript accepted
- User-friendly
- No plug-in required
- 12 languages supported
- Performance improvements as compared to the standard
- Increased usability
- Similar to Windows Explorer
- Carries complete KM functionality
- With check-in, check-out rating
- Drag and drop for emails
- Drop emails into KM
- Great overview
- Previously viewed
- Previously opened
- And a few more additional features
- A solution for individualized pages similar to iGoogle or the Personal Workspaces, but based on HTML and JavaScript
-
- Creating a ton of buzz – One company introduced a search engine based on Google Search Appliances for use within an operational purchasing department to manage items. Users can select an item from an online shop and share it within the company search engine.
- Similar to Amazon, but company internal.
- Google Search Appliances may run upwards of €5,000, but the ROI in terms of time, faster results and convenience far outweigh the cost.
- It has been working so good that other departments are asking for it.
Other hot topics in our discussions with portal users and partners included performance, monitoring, mobile devices, applications and single sign on.
