SAP TechEd Tips: 3 Unique Points to Getting the Most out of Your Visit to SAP TechEd (details your boss will praise you for)

Planning on going to the SAP TechEd in Las Vegas? Want to move up the corporate ladder faster than your peers? Here are 3 unique tips on getting the most out of your visit to the biggest SAP event of the year. And when you come back to the office with your homework done, your boss will certainly notice. Let this be your most productive event yet!

1. Pre-show Prep

Let’s start before you even get going. Prepare your game plan and agenda in advance so there is no second guessing and wondering what to do while at the show. Like they say, failure to plan is planning to fail. Just like the decision to go to Vegas, you need some sort of plan on how to get there – book plane tickets, show tickets, hotel, etc. Not only this, but your company paid big bucks for you to be at this high profile conference. Ask yourself, “How am I going to get the greatest ROI at the SAP TechEd?”

  1. Talk with your boss/colleagues/team beforehand and discuss together what everyone wants to get out of the show. When you leave the conference, what specific information must you walk away with? What vendors do you need to talk to and who do you need to see? Brainstorm ideas together to get the creative juices flowing.
  2. Plan your agenda. The SAP TechEd site makes it fairly easy to plan your sessions. (see “My Agenda/Presentations” or the SAP TechEd home page) It makes a huge difference knowing exactly where you have to be and at what time. This way you are not wasting time trying to decide or wondering what you should be doing next.

Taking action on the two points above will set you and your company far ahead of many other participants. Having a plan and setting goals before the show will substantially help to not get overwhelmed and anxious about the amount of content surrounding you every day.

On a side note, feeling overwhelmed is a by-product of lacking confidence in your plans. Why?  Because when you’ve got 100% confidence your plans are the right ones, you also know with certainty which plans are wrong.  And when you know that, you can just say “NO” to distractions, put your head down, and execute the job you’ve laid out for yourself. A set plan and specific goals forces you to stick to the content which is most relevant to your business!

2. Network

You are at the show, now what?  While you came to learn and take part in the large variety of sessions, be reminded they will be recorded. If you miss one, no big deal. (with one exception we will point out in #3) And why are we telling you that it is no big deal? Because it is far more important to talk to people and listen to others while you are present. This is your greatest opportunity to get first hand information and insight into not only your issues, but the SAP community. Nothing – not email, not internet, not the phone – nothing can beat being face-to-face with someone. Your absolute best time is spent one-on-one with other like minded people such as yourself. And there is no better opportunity to network in this industry than at the largest gathering for SAP associates.

When you aren’t talking, actively listen to what others are saying. Yes, we are telling you to eavesdrop. There is a wealth of information floating around with the exchanging of valuable thoughts and ideas.

The breakfast and lunch buffets are perfect times to get to know someone and network. Listen to what others are saying and exchange your ideas with them and the others at the table (not to mention contact information).  Trust us; everyone is more than friendly and very happy to talk.

3. Participate!

And last, but certainly not the least… participate. Be active by participating and fully engaging yourself in as much as you can. Take advantage of the exclusive opportunities to be active in the hands on sessions provided and Demo Pods available. Propel your learning by actively doing. This chance of working with other SAP experts hardly comes around, so connect with specialists in your field while you can.

And without a doubt, it is your duty to involve yourself in the ASUG Influence Sessions. This is arguably your greatest moment in SAP to let your voice be heard! Collaborate with other like minded people and meet the top guys who have the greatest influence on SAP and its future.

We hope this quick post helped. With many years of trade shows under our belts, we have learned to maximize our time and efforts through many mistakes and learning the hard way. We wish your visit to the SAP TechEd in Vegas a productive one… And one your boss will praise you for.
